76 OVR is the line
Clear it and 9 in 10 QBs arrive with Star dev or better. Fall short and your odds drop to roughly 6 in 10.
Talent tells you where to look
Top 5 Talent has never missed. Round 1 is where the real decisions are. Round 1-2 tops out at 76.
Tier 0 means franchise QB
The best QB template in the game. Every one so far has landed between 77 and 81 OVR.
Archetype changes the math
The same rating is worth more to some archetypes than others. Awareness counts twice as much for a Field General as for a Scrambler.
| Talent on the board | Reached 76+ | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Top 5 | 5 of 5 (all 78 to 81) | Draft him. No debate. |
| Round 1 | 9 of 11 | Run him through the analyzer. |
| Round 1-2 | 4 of 30 (none above 76) | Only if the analyzer says 76. |
| Round 2-3 or later | 0 of 46 | Backup at best. |
What the letter grades mean
The cutoffs are the same for every archetype. An A has no ceiling: A awareness has been anywhere from 74 to 84. Split grades like B-C show up about once every 25 grades, on any rating, and sit right on the line between the two.
| Rating | A | B | C |
|---|---|---|---|
| Awareness | 74+ | 69 to 73 | 64 to 68 |
| Short accuracy | 83+ | 78 to 82 | 73 to 77 |
| Medium accuracy | 81+ | 75 to 80 | 74 or less |
| Deep accuracy | 81+ | 75 to 80 | 74 or less |
| Throw on the run | 85+ | 80 to 84 | 79 or less |
| Throw under pressure | 77+ | 73 to 76 | 72 or less |
| Break sack | 80+ | 74 to 79 | 68 to 73 |
| Play action | 80+ | 75 to 79 | 71 to 74 |
Why 76 matters
Dev trait is hidden before the draft, but it tracks OVR. The big jump comes at 76.
| OVR | Star or better | Superstar or X-Factor |
|---|---|---|
| 68 to 70 | 4 in 10 | 1 in 12 |
| 71 to 75 | 6 in 10 | 1 in 9 |
| 76 to 77 | 9 in 10 | 1 in 3 |
| 78+ | 9 in 10 | More than half |
What the physical labels mean
Physicals show up as words instead of letters, but they work the same way: each word covers a range. Here's what each one has meant for the QBs tracked so far.
| Label | Throw power | Speed | Accel. | Agility | Change of dir. |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Elite | 94+ | 90+ | 90+ | 90+ | 90+ |
| Great | 92 to 93 | 87 to 89 | 88 to 89 | 86 to 89 | 85 to 89 |
| Good | 90 to 91 | 83 to 86 | 86 to 87 | 82 to 85 | 80 to 84 |
| Solid | 86 to 89 | 80 to 82 | 84 to 85 | 77 to 81 | 76 to 79 |
| Decent | 85 or less | 77 to 79 | 83 | 78 or less | 72 to 75 |
| Marginal-Poor | – | 76 or less | 82 or less | – | 70 or less |
How to spot a Tier 0
Madden doesn't invent draft prospects from scratch. It builds each one from a template, and the game's own files list those templates. In the Madden 24 code, every archetype has tiers, from Tier 0 at the top down to Tier 3, plus a rare Generational version for some. Each tier rolls its ratings from fixed ranges: a Tier 0 Field General, for example, always gets awareness between 79 and 84 and throw power between 93 and 96.
Because the ranges barely overlap between tiers, the letter grades can give a Tier 0 away. Madden 27's files aren't public, but the old code still points the right way: ten QBs in 27 classes fit a Tier 0 template, and every one of them came in between 77 and 81 OVR. The analyzer checks each prospect against these templates and says Likely, Plausibly or No.
| Archetype | Always shows | Big tell | Rules it out |
|---|---|---|---|
| Field General | A in AWR, SAC and MAC; Elite or Great THP | A in play action, or 6'4" or taller | A in deep accuracy, D in break sack |
| Strong Arm | A in AWR, DAC and TUP; Elite THP | None alone: needs the whole pattern | C in short accuracy; Great or Good THP |
| Improviser | A in AWR, DAC, TUP and break sack | A in medium accuracy | B or lower in deep accuracy |
| Scrambler | A in AWR; Elite speed | Elite throw power or Elite agility | Anything below Elite speed |
How we built this
No guesswork and no secret sauce. Here's exactly where the numbers come from.
Tracked every draft
Across 27 draft classes in Madden 27 franchise mode, every top quarterback was recorded twice: his scouting grades, physicals, combine and Talent before the draft, then his true ratings, overall and dev trait after. 97 QBs so far.
Cracked the overall formula
Each archetype builds its overall from its own mix of ratings. With a QB's true ratings, that formula predicts his overall within about half a point, so the only real unknown is what the letter grades hide.
Read the game's draft code
Madden 24's draft class files list the templates the game uses to build prospects and the exact rating range of each tier. Matching prospects against those templates is how the analyzer spots a Tier 0.
We'll keep testing
Each draft class was predicted without the analyzer seeing that class first. With Talent filled in, 96% of QBs landed within 1 OVR of the projection. With letter grades alone, about half did.
Always getting sharper
Every new draft class gets added to the data. Every few classes the numbers are rebuilt and the analyzer is re-tested the same way, and any change is noted here. Top 5 and Tier 0 QBs are rare, so those parts improve the most with each new class.
About Maddening
Maddening is Madden franchise mode with the dial turned up: long rebuilds, strange challenges, and decisions that look bad until they don't. Every draft class gets tracked along the way, so the guides here run on real data, not hunches.
